Indigenous Bags
These pretty bags are called “mochilas” and are true, unique works of art done by the women of the indigenous people of the region Sierra Nevada of the states Santa Marta (“the heart of the world” as it is called) and Guarjira in Colombia.
Entirely weaved by hand with natural materials and colours, they embody the culture of the indigenous people as in that the designs on the bags are in fact the symbols of the different stages of life according to their believes and traditions.
Mochila Kankuma: done by the women of the Kankuama community, the principle material is the (le fique) or vegetable fibre.
Mochila Arahuaco: done by the women of the Arahuaca community of the Sierra Nevada region in Santa Marta, the principle material is wool.
Mochila Wayuu: done by the women of the Wayuu community of the Sierra Nevada region in Santa Marta, the principle material is natural cotton.
